Nicole Gallery was founded in 1986 by Nicole Smith, a self-made businesswoman who began her career in 1971 as curator at the Centre D'Art de Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. For more than almost twenty-five years she has provided the Chicago art scene with a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic mix of artists, styles, and aesthetics. The Gallery represents some of the finest Haitian, African-American, African, and World artists. Through Nicole Smith's ties to the American and European art markets, she has been instrumental in bringing prominent 20th century Shona sculpture from Zimbabwe and international figurative painting to Chicago. The Gallery offers one of the most comprehensive permanent collections of Shona sculpture in the United States, including principal works from more than twenty-five first, second, and third generation sculptors. Through its various exhibits, the Gallery features the work of over 50 contemporary Haitian, African-American, African, and European painters and collage artists.
